On February 27, 2019, the Pakistan Air Force demonstrated its prowess in a daring operation. Pakistani pilots Hassan Siddiqui and Nouman Ali Khan successfully intercepted and destroyed two Indian Air Force aircraft, an MIG-21 and an SU-30. This operation, codenamed "Swift Retort," was a response to India's earlier violation of Pakistani airspace.
Pakistani filmmaker DJ Kamal Mustafa captured the events of that day in an animated film of the same name. The 24-minute film offers a vivid portrayal of the operation, from the initial Indian incursion to the Pakistani response.
The film begins with India's Balakot airstrike on February 26, 2019. India claimed to have inflicted significant casualties on terrorist groups, but Pakistan refuted these claims. The Pakistani government emphasized the damage caused to the environment, particularly the destruction of the Jabba forest.
In response to India's aggression, Pakistan's military leadership convened a meeting to devise a strategy for retaliation. The decision was made to launch a swift and decisive counterattack.
On February 27, Pakistani Air Force radar detected Indian jets entering Pakistani airspace. Two Pakistani JF-17 Thunders, piloted by Hassan Siddiqui and Nouman Ali Khan, were scrambled to intercept the intruders.
Engaging the Indian aircraft, the Pakistani pilots skillfully evaded enemy missiles and launched their own counterattack. The first Indian aircraft, an SU-30, was destroyed. The second, an MIG-21, was also brought down.
The Indian pilot of the MIG-21, Abhinandan Varthaman, ejected from his aircraft and was captured by Pakistani forces. His subsequent release played a significant role in de-escalating tensions between the two countries.
"Operation Swift Retort" is a testament to the bravery and skill of the Pakistani Air Force. The film serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who defend their nation's sovereignty.
